PS5 Records Strongest US Sales Month Since May 2025, Outpacing Switch 2

Consumers responded to social media’s big PS5 blackout campaign by rewarding Sony with its best US dollar share of the hardware market since May 2025, as the pricier console outsold the Switch 2 in both units and dollar sales in September.

Unit sales of the PS5 rose 22% year-over-year, while the Xbox Series X|S fell another 27% and the Switch 2 dropped 14%.

With Sony’s system considerably more expensive than when it launched, dollar sales also climbed 43% year-over-year, according to analyst Mat Piscatella. Microsoft endured its worst September on record.

PlayStation’s success was partly powered by Marvel’s Wolverine, which beat NBA 2K27 to become the best-selling game of the month. It shot straight to the 11th best-selling game of the year so far, marking Sony’s strongest first-party launch since Helldivers 2 in 2024.

Logan’s success didn’t stop there: the officially licensed yellow DualSense controller tie-in was also the US’ best-selling accessory for the month.

September was one of the busiest months of the year for new releases, so the success of both Marvel’s Wolverine and the PS5 as a whole cannot be underestimated here.

Even more remarkable is that all of this was achieved against the backdrop of the PS5 blackout, which concluded at the start of this sales tracking period. Participants were encouraged to stick with the initiative indefinitely.

Remember, many companies have now stopped providing Circana with digital sales data, leading to projections from the analytics firm.

But Sony is one of the few companies that continues to be transparent about its results.
