Hold onto your orange jumpsuits, folks! Prison Architect 2, the sequel to the beloved prison management sim, is finally showing signs of life after an extended period of development. Originally slated for a 2024 release, the game has faced delays, leaving fans wondering if it would ever see the light of day. But now, a new beta test signals that we might be closer than ever to experiencing the next generation of prison design.

A Glimmer of Hope: The New Beta Test

Following an initial beta in April – the first official update from Paradox since its indefinite delay in 2024 – Prison Architect 2 is gearing up for another closed beta test in September. While the sign-up sheet, which asked potential testers to commit to a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), is now closed, this new wave of testing suggests that development is progressing and that a release might be on the horizon.

The upcoming playtest will run from September 9th to 15th. Whether this closed beta will be followed by an open beta remains to be seen, but for now, it’s a positive sign for those eagerly awaiting the sequel.

Remembering the Wait: A Look Back

Back in August 2024, Paradox Interactive acknowledged the need for more time to refine both the game’s performance and its content. They even offered refunds to players who had pre-ordered the game, a clear indication that a new release date wasn’t imminent. The game hasn’t been available for purchase since then, leading some to speculate about its cancellation. Above is a video showcasing what the game looked like during that period.

It’s been over a decade since the original Prison Architect graced our screens. While the first game launched on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and iOS, Prison Architect 2 is planned for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Let’s hope this new beta test brings us closer to finally experiencing the next chapter in prison management!
