Pokémon Scalpers Fume as 30th Anniversary Card Set Deliberately Rare Cards Made Easy to Find

Pokémon scalpers are voicing frustration after the franchise’s newly released 30th Anniversary trading card set proved too generous with its rare cards, leaving resellers unable to generate their usual profits. Last week saw the long-awaited Pokémon Trading Card game set go on sale, prompting the usual scramble for stock among sellers hoping to turn a quick profit.

The launch was accompanied by the familiar chaos seen at previous releases, including long lines outside stores in the U.S., frustration over “ghost chairs” left outside for days, and ructions in the U.K. after accusations that a minor celebrity had ignored purchase limits and skipped the queue to snatch up supply. But as the dust settled, collectors quickly discovered that the 30th Anniversary set’s rare cards actually weren’t that rare at all.

The Pokémon Company Fights Back Against Scalpers

It appears The Pokémon Company has done its best to defeat the usual scalper market by making all of the set’s main cards findable with relative ease. Collectors have noted that the difficulty of pulling rare cards from booster packs was noticeably reduced compared to previous releases, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to keep the hobby accessible for everyday fans.

The only cards now being resold in the low thousands of dollars are the three eye-wateringly colored Red, Green and Blue Mew cards, which do seem to have a low drop rate. Otherwise, resale prices dip to well under $250 for everything else. Most of the top 15 expensive cards have been judged as being worth around $100 or less — a far cry from the thousands of dollars seen in previous sets.

Scalpers Face Financial Setback

This is great news for most fans, who will be able to fill their binders with the majority of cards rather than finding a good chunk left well beyond reach. However, it’s less great news for scalpers who invested thousands of dollars in buying up stock expecting to make a huge margin.

“2-3 years ago, quite literally on this subreddit, many people were anticipating the 30th anniversary as a bull catalyst for exit strategies for their investments. The literal complete opposite happened.”

The backlash was particularly vocal on dedicated reddit /r/PokeInvesting, where several collectors lamented the collapse of what they had hoped would be a lucrative investment opportunity. One writer warned that prices could fall even further as more people begin offloading their stock.

“It’ll crush even more when more and more people start dumping. It’s gonna be a bloody mess.”

A Longer-Term Perspective

Not everyone is upset, however. In another /r/PokeInvesting thread, one fan suggested that the 30th Anniversary set’s easy hit rates were actually good for money-making in the long term. The reasoning was that more children and potential collectors will be lured in by the high rate of rare cards this time around — only for scarcity to inevitably return in future sets.

“I actually think this set is extremely healthy for the hobby long term. This is a set that is a blast to open; and should be decently available for the common collector. At some point you want people to have fun; and this set should give the hobby the breath of fresh air that it needs. The more fun people have, the longer they stay in. The longer people stay engaged; the higher our investments will go.”

The sentiment reflects a broader debate within the Pokémon card community about the tension between accessibility and investment value. While some collectors worry that easy availability could devalue the hobby, others argue that drawing in new players is essential for its long-term survival.

Looking Ahead

For those looking forward to what comes next, the next Pokémon trading card set, Mega Evolution — Delta Reign, will launch as soon as November. Whether it follows the accessible approach of the 30th Anniversary release or returns to greater scarcity remains to be seen.

As always, collectors are advised to purchase cards for enjoyment rather than investment, given the volatility that scalper-driven markets can introduce. The 30th Anniversary set has clearly struck a chord with everyday fans, even if it has left speculators grumbling about their lost profit margins.
