As a lifelong Pokémon fan, I always look forward to the annual Pokémon World Championships and the accompanying XP convention. This year in San Francisco was no exception, but unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I wasn’t able to snag tickets through the lottery. Whether it was due to The Pokémon Company trying to combat scalpers or some other reason, I missed out. But watching the opening ceremony online? Let’s just say the FOMO is real.
The Soundtrack of a Generation
The show kicked off with a spectacular performance by the Grammy-winning video game orchestra, 8-Bit Big Band. They delivered a lengthy tribute to the series’ incredible 30 years of music. Starting with a medley of iconic tracks from the original games, they then transitioned into a multi-generational selection spanning the entire Pokémon universe. It was truly a journey through time for any long-time fan.
I had the privilege of seeing this amazing group perform Shovel Knight’s music last year in New York City, and I would gladly pay top dollar if they were to take this concert on tour. They clearly put a lot of effort into crafting longer arrangements for each song, especially when performing such a masterful medley on stage at the convention.
A Weekend for Pokémon Fans
This weekend is packed with excitement for all things Pokémon. Tournaments for most of its games are being streamed daily, and XP, the new fan convention, offers a plethora of panels and activities alongside the competition in San Francisco. And as always, there’s typically some big news revealed during the closing ceremony on Sunday.
While I may have missed out on attending this year, I’m still following all the action online. And who knows, maybe next year I’ll finally get my chance to experience the magic of Pokémon Worlds and XP firsthand!
