Beijing-based studio S-Game unveiled its long-awaited action RPG Phantom Blade Zero as a new installment in the Rainblood/Phantom Blade series, confirming it will launch worldwide on PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam on October 29. Announced during August’s PlayStation State of Play event, the game fuses wuxia martial arts cinema with fantasy and folk horror into what the studio has playfully dubbed “kungfupunk,” delivering a combat system that reviewers have already likened to both Dark Souls and the John Wick film franchise.
The reveal came alongside an 11-minute trailer in which S-Game showcased the opening cinematic of Phantom Blade Zero, along with extended footage of in-game combat and boss encounters. The gameplay appears heavily rooted in the punishing, methodical design popularized by soulslikes, placing a strong emphasis on parrying and timing while featuring some spectacular, gun-fu-inspired enemy finishers that recall the choreography of John Wick.
An Authentic Martial Arts Combat System
According to S-Game’s official Steam page, the combat in Phantom Blade Zero is designed to be authentic to Chinese martial arts rather than a generic Hollywood pastiche. The studio said it developed the system in collaboration with choreographers who have worked on classic wuxia films, lending a sense of grounded technique to what would otherwise be an over-the-top action experience. On screen, the fights look intense and kinetic, balancing deliberate defensive reads against bursts of acrobatic offense.

The studio’s self-coined term “kungfupunk” captures the game’s tonal ambition, blending the traditional genre of martial arts heroes set in ancient China with darker fantasy and folk horror elements. It positions Phantom Blade Zero as something distinct within an increasingly crowded action RPG market that has seen a surge of soulslike competitors in recent years.
A Framed Assassin With Only 66 Days to Live
In the campaign, players take up the mantle of Soul, an elite assassin who is framed for the murder of his master. As he seeks to clear his name and uncover who is really behind the conspiracy, Soul must contend with a time-based mechanic that adds genuine stakes to every encounter. Having suffered a near-fatal wound to the heart, Soul has only 66 days left to live before death claims him.
This mortality-driven system echoes mechanics seen in Blood of the Dawnwalker and earlier entries in the Phantom Blade series, where players must weigh their actions against an ever-ticking clock. The pressure of a finite lifespan is expected to shape exploration, side content, and the pacing of boss encounters throughout the roughly single-player experience.
Pricing and Pre-Order Bonuses
Pre-orders are now open across digital storefronts, with the Standard Edition priced at $59.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition available for $69.99. As an added incentive, S-Game announced that anyone who pre-orders Phantom Blade Zero on the Epic Games Store will receive a Soul cosmetic set in Fortnite, extending the game’s brand into one of the world’s most popular online titles.
All pre-orders are digital only, and the studio has not confirmed whether a physical edition will ever be released. Given Sony’s apparent reluctance to ship discs for its first-party and third-party games in recent years, a physical release seems unlikely, though no official statement has been made on the matter.
Looking Ahead
With Phantom Blade Zero now locked onto an October 29 launch date, S-Game’s focus shifts to delivering one of the more distinctive action experiences in recent memory. The combination of soulslike difficulty, authentic Chinese martial arts choreography, and a ticking-clock narrative gives the game a clear identity even before release.
Fans who pre-ordered can now look forward to roughly three months of anticipation before Soul’s 66-day countdown reaches its conclusion. As one of the most anticipated entries in the Phantom Blade series since its revival, Phantom Blade Zero will be closely watched by both longtime followers and newcomers curious whether S-Game’s kungfupunk vision lives up to its striking trailer.
