Overwatch’s Highly Anticipated Unvaulted Battle Pass Delayed to Next Season

That exciting new feature you’ve been eagerly awaiting – the Unvaulted battle passes – is now slated to arrive with the start of Season 5, pushing back its release from the previously planned mid-season update. This means you’ll have a little more time to grind those matches before diving into a fresh wave of rewards.

What’s Behind the Delay?

Aaron Keller, Director at Blizzard Entertainment, shed light on the delay in a blog post. The core reason boils down to ensuring a polished and bug-free launch. “We’ve decided to push Unvaulting to the start of Season 5 [to] give our amazing QA team extra time to test it as thoroughly as possible,” Keller explained. He emphasized Blizzard’s commitment to delivering a high-quality experience, stating, “No one likes bugs, and we want to do everything we can to ensure this long-desired feature is as bug free as possible when finally available to you all.”

A Familiar System, Evolving

The concept of battle passes built around a sense of urgency and limited-time availability was popularized by games like Fortnite. Overwatch’s battle pass system has operated similarly since 2022. However, the industry is seeing a shift towards more player-friendly systems, with live-service titles offering greater flexibility in earning rewards. A prime example is Marvel Rivals, where battle passes never expire once purchased.

What to Expect from Unvaulted Passes

While details remain scarce, Blizzard initially announced in August that Unvaulted Passes would allow players to easily acquire emotes, sprays, and other battle pass cosmetics they might have missed out on previously. While some older forms of currency and mythic skins won’t carry over, this system promises a convenient way for both new and returning players to experience the full spectrum of Overwatch content.
