The Oregon Coast Aquarium has named a new giant Pacific octopus after Juicebox, a changeling character from Matt Dinniman’s fantasy series Dungeon Crawler Carl. The aquarium welcomed the animal and announced its name in a report by Oregon Live.
Juicebox will share the aquarium with another octopus named Donut — a 22.5-pound male named after Princess Donut, also from the series. This marks the second time the aquarium has named an octopus after a character from Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Aquarists who selected Juicebox’s name told Oregon Live that the choice reflected octopuses’ natural ability to change their appearance and blend into their surroundings. In the books, Juicebox is a changeling able to shift into various forms at will.

Juicebox is now on display at the aquarium in Newport, where it will remain for about a year before being released back to the reef.

The naming follows broader growth for Dungeon Crawler Carl, which has risen from a popular LitRPG book series into wider cultural prominence. This year, the eighth book in the series is set to be released, alongside tabletop games and an entire toy line.

A television adaptation was also confirmed at Peacock, with Seth McFarlane in charge of the project.

The octopus trend has been boosted by the aquarium’s earlier naming of a creature called Anakin. The series’ growing popularity — including its Star Wars-adjacent cultural footprint — has drawn comparisons to that franchise, though Dungeon Crawler Carl is not expected to reach the same level of fame as Star Wars.
