As October settles in with cooler temperatures and longer nights, the major streaming platforms have collectively cranked up their horror programming, rolling out a slate of twelve films spanning decades of the genre. From Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 suspense classic to brand-new releases slated for this year, viewers now have ample opportunity to embrace the Halloween spirit early by curling up and watching movies designed to give them nightmares.

The offerings available this month range from true classics to fresh titles, covering every subgenre imaginable—zombies, slashers, body horror, and even some creepy romance. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the macabre or just looking to dip your toes into the genre, there is something on these lists for everyone. And if a scene gets too intense, viewers can always press pause until they feel ready to continue.

A Road Trip Through Cannibal Romance

Bones and All (2022), available on Pluto, offers an especially gory spin on young love by focusing on the budding romance between a pair of cannibals. Taylor Russell plays Maren, who has a history of biting people and sets out on a cross-country road trip in hopes of finding her mother and getting answers about her gruesome cravings. She meets and falls for Lee, played by Timothée Chalamet, another “eater,” as the two try to build a new life together.

“It’s more remarkable for the way he and Kajganich navigate the push and pull between the story’s romantic elements and horror themes. There’s a big metaphor at play here about how parents, families, and friends enable aberrant behavior until it feels normal… And it plays in radically different ways at the same time: both through the lens of two young kids on a romantic road trip, and as two growing monsters seducing and killing other people for food.”

The Luca Guadagnino-directed film runs 2 hours and 10 minutes, with Michael Stuhlbarg rounding out the cast.

Stephen King’s Supernatural Legacy Continues

Doctor Sleep (2019), streaming on Paramount Plus, picks up 31 years after The Shining. Mike Flanagan’s adaptation follows Danny Torrance, played by Ewan McGregor, as he struggles to cope with memories of his father’s murderous rampage. The film leans further into Danny’s psychic powers as he forges a connection with a girl who also possesses “the Shining,” trying to protect her from a brutal vampire. Running 2 hours and 32 minutes, the film features Rebecca Ferguson and Kyliegh Curran alongside McGregor.

The genre-bending Freaks (2019), available on HBO, tells a slower-burning mystery that unfurls gradually. Emile Hirsch plays Henry, a father who insists his 7-year-old daughter Chloe—played by Lexy Kolker—never leave their possibly haunted dilapidated suburban home because “bad people” lurk outside. With Bruce Dern and Grace Park also in the cast, the film runs 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The Slashers That Defined a Genre

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) remains one of the most influential horror films ever made. Available on HBO, Wes Craven’s cult classic follows teenagers pursued by the undead killer Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund, who can kill by entering victims’ dreams. Designed to make viewers afraid of going to sleep, the 1 hour and 31 minute film inspired numerous sequels and starred John Saxon and Heather Langenkamp.

Wes Craven returns with Scream (1996), streaming on Pluto as part of a four-film marathon. Writer Kevin Williamson’s meta-thoughtful entry mocks slasher genre tropes, where knowing horror trivia can be a matter of life or death. High school students pursued by a costumed killer try to survive using movie logic. The 1 hour and 51 minute film starred David Arquette, Neve Campbell, and Courteney Cox.

Suspense Masters and Modern Innovations

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) helped establish the slasher genre with its infamous shower scene—one of the most famous moments in cinematic history. Available on Netflix, the 1 hour and 49 minute film follows embezzling secretary Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh, who hides out at the remote Bates Motel before finding something sinister lurking inside. Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, and John Gavin round out the cast.

It Follows (2014) made the most of a tiny budget to become another cult hit. David Robert Mitchell’s film follows college student Jay Height, played by Maika Monroe, who is pursued by a strange entity after having sex with her boyfriend Hugh, played by Jake Weary. Chased by a force only she can see, Jay seeks answers while trying to buy herself time. The 1 hour and 40 minute film also featured Keir Gilchrist and Daniel Zovatto.

A Look Ahead

The Sixth Sense (1999), available on Netflix, established M. Night Shyamalan’s penchant for twist endings. Bruce Willis plays child psychiatrist Malcolm Crowe who sees redemption by helping Cole Sear—played by Haley Joel Osment—a boy with the ability to see ghosts. The 1 hour and 47 minute film remains one of his best works.

For those looking toward the future, Hokum (2026) arrives on Hulu as a newer entry in the genre. Directed by Damian McCarthy, it follows American author Ohm Bauman—played by Adam Scott—who travels to an Irish hotel where his parents honeymooned to scatter their ashes. Discovering the honeymoon suite is supposedly haunted by a witch, he confronts strange locals and staff while facing his own past. The 1 hour and 47 minute film also features Florence Ordesh and Peter Coonan.

With offerings spanning from classic suspense to contemporary horror across Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Paramount Plus, and Pluto, October provides the perfect backdrop for a season of scares. Whether you’re revisiting beloved favorites or discovering new terrors, there is plenty to keep viewers entertained—and perhaps a little frightened—as the spooky season unfolds.
