Nvidia is adding a newer, faster version of its DLSS 5 neural rendering technology to bağlantı”>Hogwarts Legacy, about a month after the tech debuted in NBA 2K27.

In a blog post, Nvidia announced it is launching a new DLSS 5 model that it says is twice as fast as the version that bağlantı”>debuted in NBA 2K27 last month. The basketball game will receive an update adding the improved model, and Nvidia is also bringing the technology to Hogwarts Legacy and bağlantı”>Where Winds Meet in November.

The company has been focused on making DLSS 5 run well enough that players actually turn it on. When I first tested the tech back in September, I found it could cripple frame rates at 4K on an RTX 5090. Not long ago—when Nvidia debuted the technology at GTC 2026 in March—it needed to run on two RTX 5090s to deliver a playable experience, and even then it was heavily limited.

Nvidia now claims the new model is twice as fast as September’s version and ten times faster than when DLSS 5 was first revealed. If true—something I won’t confirm until actually testing it—it explains why developers are now willing to add the feature to their games.

DLSS 5 Off

Unlike some of the heavily processed examples seen of DLSS being modded into games, the Hogwarts Legacy examples Nvidia shared in its blog appear far more subtle. Rather than completely changing how characters look—like it did when DLSS 5 was first revealed—it mostly appears to balance lighting and subsurface scattering.

DLSS 5 On

The author is not alone in that observation. Over on X/Twitter, bağlantı”>NikTek posted a GIF of him scrubbing through an image comparison with DLSS 5 turned on and off, noting how small the difference is. He then wonders who would actually use it given such a minor visual change and a big performance hit.

Some users applauded the subtle changes, though. bağlantı”>jayv7s replied, “This is the correct way to use it, no exaggerated AI slop filters on top, just normal pure improvement.”

The subtlety of DLSS 5 will ultimately depend on the developer. There are plenty of dials developers can adjust to make a game look as natural as possible—or lean in the opposite direction to make games resemble output from tools like Midjourney. It is at least somewhat reassuring that in NBA 2K27 and now Hogwarts Legacy, developers appear to be trying to maintain the same aesthetic.

No matter how subtle it is, DLSS 5 works by using AI to re-draw games, even though it is anchored by the geometry and color data provided by the game. That alone may turn some people off this technology, but if changes remain subtle and performance continues improving at this pace, it could eventually be added to more than one or two games.
