Nonolith is a 2D puzzler that drops players into a colossal living maze, requiring them to escape by manipulating the scenery around them. Created by Justcamh, it casts you as a hapless gnome imprisoned inside the edifice; beyond running and jumping, every chunk of environment can be copy-pasted, moved, rotated or deleted.

The manipulation ranges from simple – lifting a wall aside or cropping hanging stone into a staircase – to more elaborate. Hidden spells activate when tiles are arranged in specific patterns, alongside conventional props such as pistons that shove other blocks around.

Nine “worlds” fill the Nonolith on a 3×3 grid, each solvable many ways. The main goal is escape, but per the game’s Steam page this is only the start: “For the most adventurous, escape is only the beginning,” it reads, promising that reaching “the highest level of mastery and the Nonolith will succumb to your will” grants power to those who dare wield control.

A demo is now available on Steam, with the full game due later this year. The writer at Rock Paper Shotgun, who recently played Echo Weaver, likens Nonolith’s feel to Animal Well and/or Fez. Both of those games lean on unlockables that Nonolith rejects; it notes the design harks back to an era when videogames offered everything from the start, even Genesis-era Sonic the Hedgehog never unlocking so much as a small speed bonus.
