Get ready for a brand-new adventure in the galaxy far, far away! The upcoming film, Star Wars: Starfighter, is generating serious buzz, especially after confirmation of a lightsaber duel. But before fans get too excited about potential cameos from familiar faces, the writer has stepped in to clarify things.
No Familiar Faces?
The news that Star Wars: Starfighter will feature lightsabers naturally sparked speculation about whether any beloved characters from the Skywalker Saga might make an appearance. Given that the film is set after The Rise of Skywalker and considering Lucasfilm’s interest in featuring Rey Skywalker again in “several” movies, the possibility seemed tantalizing. However, writer Jonathan Tropper has firmly shut down those rumors.
“Obviously, lightsabers are a part of that universe and that part of that galaxy,” Tropper told Screenrant. “I’m so careful not to reveal anything, but essentially, I think it’s known that we have no legacy characters. You’re not going to see any of the characters you’ve seen in the other movies.” He added, “So there are certain things that are still hallmarks of Star Wars that it’s good to have in there. But more than that, I can’t say.”
Tom Cruise and Lightsaber Action
Adding another layer of intrigue, the lightsaber fight was filmed with the involvement of none other than Tom Cruise! The Top Gun star reportedly visited the film’s set one day and ended up contributing to its production. This unexpected collaboration has only amplified the anticipation surrounding this new installment.
So, who will be wielding those iconic lightsabers? While Lucasfilm is keeping plot details tightly under wraps, it seems likely that the antagonists, played by Matt Smith and Mia Goth, might be involved in the upcoming duel. Rumors suggest they could be playing Sith-aligned foes, although this remains unconfirmed.

A Standalone Adventure
“This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel,” director Shawn Levy previously stated at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in April. “It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”
