Nintendo Announces Switch 2 Revision for Europe

In March, a Japanese outlet named Nikkei reported that Nintendo was developing a revised version of the Switch 2 to meet European Union regulations, which permit users to replace batteries in consumer devices independently. This week, Nintendo’s official European website confirmed that future compliant versions of the Switch 2 for this region will bear distinct model numbers and carry the additional code ‘OSM’ on their packaging, marking them as separate products.

According to the compliance message below, these changes will take effect from February 18th, 2027:

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries (Batteries Regulation)

Echoing the goals of the WEEE Directive, the new Batteries Regulation seeks to curb the environmental footprint of battery production, distribution, usage, disposal, and recycling. It bans the sale of batteries containing certain hazardous metals and imposes strict labeling, safe removal, collection, and recycling requirements. Nintendo’s products already meet these standards, and the company works closely with authorized regional bodies to ensure batteries are collected and recycled responsibly.

From February 18, 2027 onward, the Regulation mandates that batteries embedded in specific EU‑sold appliances must remain user‑replaceable throughout the product’s lifespan. Nintendo is proactively adapting its lineup to meet this rule, issuing updated models that carry distinct model numbers and the “OSM” code on their packaging to signal regulatory compliance.

Earlier this year, the cryptic “OSM” code had fueled speculation about a forthcoming Switch 2. It turns out the designation simply reflects the company’s compliance strategy for the new EU battery law.

While the updated models will grant users easier battery access without disassembly, the external appearance is likely to remain unchanged. Nintendo previously released a 2019 revision of the original Switch that extended battery life and patched a security flaw in the Nvidia chipset, all while keeping the console’s look identical.
