In a move that has electrified the gaming community, Nintendo has officially confirmed a full remake of the iconic 1998 title The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The beloved 3D adventure, which first introduced players to the expansive world of Hyrule, is being rebuilt from scratch for the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
“The Nintendo 64 classic returns for a new generation in 2026, reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2,” the company announced during today’s presentation.
While details remain sparse, a brief teaser trailer showcased at the Direct event offered a glimpse into the project’s aesthetic direction. The footage opens against a tapestry backdrop, weaving a narrative that highlights Hyrule, the Kokiri forest, and their fairy companions. It then introduces a solitary boy—presumably Link—without a fairy, before cutting to a sleeping version of the hero, hinting at the new visual style that will define the remake.
So far, Nintendo has withheld any gameplay footage or deeper insights into the revamped world, leaving fans to speculate about the scope of the overhaul and the potential for fresh mechanics.
First unveiled on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has captivated gamers with its immersive time-travel adventure featuring Link’s epic battle against the malevolent king Ganondorf. To date, this critically acclaimed title has only been accessible on contemporary Nintendo consoles through the Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.
Recently, Nintendo announced plans for a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time exclusively for the yet-to-be-released Nintendo Switch 2. Although a specific release date has yet to be confirmed, the company has hinted at a 2026 launch window. Given the current trend among publishers to steer clear of Grand Theft Auto VI’s release, there is speculation that Nintendo may follow suit and bring forward this remake before November 2022.
