Frame generation is now standard technology in games, but a new patent filed by Sony offers its first detailed look at how the feature could work on the PlayStation 6. According to a report by Jackie Thomas for IGN, the company’s recently filed patent describes an approach that would incorporate controller input data to improve frame prediction.

The patent, titled “Generation Super Sampling” (US-20260320740-A1), outlines what is essentially standard frame generation: a model takes information from a traditionally rendered frame and uses it to generate an interpolated frame. The key difference lies in how the model predicts changes between frames.
In DLSS frame generation, rendered frames are used while motion vector information is pulled from the game engine. Sony’s proposed PlayStation model would additionally draw input data from the controller to more accurately predict player movement from one frame to the next. According to the patent notes, this aims to limit latency or “hitching” between frames.
Possible Multi-Frame Generation
The patent also keeps open the possibility of multi-frame generation, a feature introduced on PC with the RTX 5090 in 2025. The patent notes: “In some embodiments, the predictions are not limited to an immediate next image in the image stream. The decoder system may be trained to predict any number of images before or after the input image.”
The value of generating multiple frames on a console—presumably connected to a TV—is unclear. On PC, multi-frame generation is mainly useful at super-high refresh rates of 144Hz or higher, while even high-refresh-rate TVs are typically capped at 120Hz.
Sony’s Recent Patent Activity
The report notes that Sony has been active with patents recently, suggesting it is building toward its next console generation. Last month, the company filed a patent describing an AI agent monitoring your system and deploying fixes before problems are noticed, followed by one proposing an NFC reader in the PlayStation controller to enable tap-to-pay.
Because these remain only patents, there is no guarantee any of the technologies will be released—though they suggest the PlayStation 6 could prove to be a notable console.
