Get ready for some serious chills, because the new Spanish-language trailer for Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie is sending shockwaves through the gaming community. Released on September 1, 2026, the trailer opens with Bryan Hodukavich (played by Austin Abrams) cautiously entering a maternity ward. The scene is immediately unsettling, as the ward appears to be overrun by a fleshy substance, and tragically, so are the bassinets meant for newborn babies.
Another chilling shot depicts a corpse’s feet being consumed by thin, wormlike vines. The corpse then rises, seemingly animated by one of these vines protruding from its cheek, as a horrified Hodukavich watches on.
Las Plagas Theories Abound
Unsurprisingly, this imagery has ignited speculation about the return of Las Plagas. These parasites, infamous for their tentacle-like growths and ability to transform hosts into terrifying beings, were central to the events of Resident Evil 4. The visual similarities are undeniable.
Cregger’s Inspiration: RE4 and RE7
Director Zach Cregger has been vocal about his inspirations for the film. In a September 1 Reddit AMA, he revealed that Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7 had the biggest influence on his creative approach.
“I like the idea of borrowing the rhythm and scale from [Resident Evil] 4 and using some of the character elements from [Resident Evil] 7,” Cregger explained. “7 is when Ethan comes into it, and I like that you’re just a normal dude going through this horrible situation. 4 has the rhythm that I really like where you’re moving from set piece to set piece and location to location. 4 is such a big game. You go through all these different – it feels like worlds, from the village to the castle, to the island. It’s just like, it keeps giving and giving.”

The Las Plagas speculation isn’t the only exciting reveal. The film’s official social media accounts also shared a promotional poster featuring an X-ray image of a Doberman Pinscher – the dog breed that famously antagonizes players in several early games. The caption reads: “The subject is… changing,” strongly implying that this particular Doberman has been infected with the T-Virus.
This is just another example of how Cregger is weaving in familiar elements from the classic games while crafting his own unique story. While he was initially hesitant to create a direct adaptation, it’s clear that he understands the importance of honoring the source material and delivering fan service.
