As Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie continues to spread to theaters worldwide, a dedicated member of the modding community has found a creative way to keep the film’s legacy alive on PC. Roughly a week after the film’s premiere, Nexus Mods user D0ct0rSauce unveiled a Bryan skin mod for Resident Evil 2, transforming Austin Abrams’ doomed courier into a deliberately retro, PlayStation 1-inspired character built from just a handful of simple polygons.

Given the modding community’s long and storied relationship with Capcom’s legendary survival horror franchise, a mod based on the new live-action adaptation felt inevitable. The Bryan skin lets players extend the unfortunate courier’s horrific run through Raccoon City within the beloved 2019 remake, swapping the default protagonist’s look for something far more nostalgic.

A Deliberately Low-Poly Makeover

While Abrams is the one delivering Bryan’s shrieks and screams throughout the film’s hour-and-a-half runtime, this fan-made version of the character isn’t quite as detailed. It is more of a PlayStation 1-inspired take, breaking the character down to a few simple polygons as a replacement for Leon’s retro skin. Players can see gameplay footage of the mod, featuring art created by X/Twitter user @mindnumb_opus, below.

Resident Evil Movie Main Character Gets a PS1 Makeover in New RE2 Mod

“Thanks to @mindnumb_opus’ excellent 3D artwork, I’m excited to reveal a mod we’ve developed that makes Bryan from the new Resident Evil movie playable in the Resident Evil 2 remake!”

The accompanying artwork leans fully into the era-defining aesthetic, rendering Bryan as a blocky, low-resolution figure that would feel right at home on a disc from the late 1990s. The reveal came with a healthy dose of self-aware humor from the creator, who posted the footage several times across social media while jokingly apologizing for the “shitty gameplay” surrounding the star attraction.

A Film That Exceeded Expectations

The movie brought Bryan to theaters when it premiered September 18, 2026, and its commercial performance has been nothing short of spectacular. Cregger’s latest horror flick managed to exceed expectations with a $108 million global debut, an opening tally that earned its place as the biggest first weekend in franchise history just days after reviews cemented it as the highest-rated video game adaptation of all time.

The film then continued its theatrical run in weekend two with an additional $50 million added to the pot. Its total now stands at more than $196.5 million, a figure that far exceeds its reported budget of $75 million (via Variety).

Critical reception has been equally warm, with IGN awarding it an 8/10 review. “With a laser focus on putting its hero through the worst night of his life, Resident Evil is a simple and exciting survival horror story that benefits greatly from director Zach Cregger’s sensibilities,” the outlet wrote.

Looking Ahead

The community’s creativity shows no signs of slowing down, and with the film’s momentum building, expect even more ambitious projects to emerge in the weeks ahead.
