2K Sports has confirmed that NBA 2K25 will be delisted from digital storefronts on October 30, 2026, with the title fully discontinued and its servers shut down by December 31, 2026. The announcement means that online functionality across the game—including the beloved single-player MyCareer mode and the popular MyTeam component—will cease to operate once the shutdown takes effect.

In a post released this week, 2K Sports laid out a clear timeline for the retirement of its 2024 release. While owners will still be able to redownload and play the game offline after servers go dark, all multiplayer features and access to every online mode will be removed as of January 1, 2026. This effectively renders MyCareer and MyTeam unplayable, since both modes require a persistent connection to function, and players will no longer be able to acquire virtual currency.

Which Modes Will Survive the Shutdown

Despite the sweeping closure of online features, 2K Sports confirmed that several offline-friendly experiences will remain available after January 1, 2027. Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA modes are expected to continue functioning once NBA 2K25 goes dark. These modes do not rely on the same online infrastructure as MyCareer and MyTeam, allowing them to persist even after the servers are decommissioned.

NBA 2K25 will be removed from sale on October 30, 2026 and then fully discontinued on December 31, 2026. As of January 1, 2026, all multiplayer games and access to every online mode will be removed.

The timeline marks roughly two years of full online operation for NBA 2K25, which launched in October 2024. This aligns with a pattern that has become somewhat routine for the franchise. The previous year’s entry, NBA 2K24, was discontinued on January 31, 2026, following the precedent set when NBA 2K23 went dark a year prior to that. Publishers routinely shift resources toward newer releases as older titles age out of their commercial lifecycle.

Fan Frustration Over Shortened Lifespans

The impending closure has drawn criticism from players who feel two years simply is not enough time to invest in modes like MyCareer. Fans pour significant hours into building and developing their teams, only to find those efforts inaccessible once the servers shut down. This frustration echoes across the broader sports gaming community, where similar delisting practices have sparked debate about how long publishers should maintain support for older titles.

For a franchise as expansive as NBA 2K, there are additional factors at play beyond simple resource allocation. The games feature countless real-world athletes, teams, and brands, meaning licensing and legal agreements may impose constraints that make extended server operation impractical or costly to sustain.

Looking Ahead

The newest entry in the franchise, NBA 2K27, launched in September 2026. If the established pattern holds steady, that title could be delisted around October 2028 and fully shut down by January 2029. Players hoping to preserve access to their online modes may want to consider transitioning to offline-friendly experiences before the servers go dark, or simply look forward to whatever improvements await in future installments of the series.
