Capcom officially announced today that it is retiring the divisive “Edit Voucher” microtransaction in Monster Hunter Wilds, a move designed to address one of the game’s most heavily criticized monetization features. Starting from 3 December, players will no longer be able to purchase character edit vouchers from digital storefronts; instead, each player will receive 10 Character Edit Vouchers and 10 Palico Edit Vouchers for free.

The temporary allocation of free vouchers is expected to sustain players until the release of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a major expansion slated for sometime next year. Upon its launch, all players will gain unrestricted access to re-editing the appearance of their hunter and Palico as many times as they wish, completely free of charge and without any requirement for a Character Edit Voucher.

A Long-Term Solution for Character Customization

The change represents a significant shift in how Capcom handles cosmetic customization within the title. While the voucher system will remain in place until next year’s expansion, players who have no intention of purchasing the Ascendance expansion should note that they can still customize their characters indefinitely once the free edit feature goes live.

This decision effectively retires what many considered to be the game’s most egregious microtransaction. The ability to alter a hunter’s appearance was previously gated behind consumable vouchers, prompting widespread frustration from the community over what was perceived as paying for a basic quality-of-life function that should have been available at launch.

The pendants listed above may become available separately at a later date.

Compensation for Previous Purchasers

For players who already spent real-world money on character customization before this change was announced, the news may be somewhat disappointing. Capcom has confirmed that it will not issue refunds for previously purchased vouchers.

In lieu of reimbursements, however, the publisher will distribute an in-game pendant set as a token of appreciation to those players. The Special Thank-You Pendant Set, which includes the Heavenly Hog and Beelzeboar pendants, becomes claimable from 3 December. Capcom noted that these specific pendants may also be made available for separate purchase at some point in the future.

The series has long been celebrated for its imaginative monster nomenclature, with these compensation items fitting neatly into that tradition of creative naming conventions throughout the franchise’s history.

A Difficult Year for the Title

This announcement arrives at a pivotal moment for Monster Hunter Wilds. While the game launched to strong sales and critical attention, its reputation has suffered considerably over the past year. The primary driver of this decline has been the title’s widely criticized PC performance, which has remained a point of contention among players since release.

The removal of the edit voucher microtransaction represents one of Capcom’s most direct responses to community feedback following that troubled launch window. By eliminating what many viewed as an unfair monetization practice, the publisher appears intent on rebuilding trust with its player base during a challenging period for the title.

Looking Ahead

The transition takes effect on 3 December, when both the free vouchers and the Special Thank-You Pendant Set become available. Players should plan to claim their complimentary items before the voucher system is fully retired from all digital storefronts.

The full realization of this customization overhaul will arrive with Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance next year, at which point unlimited free character editing becomes standard for every player regardless of whether they have purchased the expansion. Until then, Capcom’s temporary voucher distribution provides a bridge between the old monetization model and the more open approach that defines the upcoming content.
