Microsoft Unveils Excel’s May 2026 Feature Rollout

Published: Updated:

As the month draws to a close, it’s time to revisit the latest enhancements Microsoft has rolled out for Excel over the past four weeks. April 2026 was a relatively quiet period, with only a handful of Copilot updates, and this month is following suit with just three new features announced across all platforms.

On Windows and macOS, Microsoft has streamlined Copilot’s entry points, trimming them down to just two. One of these is the Dynamic Action Button (DAB), a floating Copilot icon that appears in the lower‑right corner of the Excel window. The button has sparked controversy among users who feel the AI is being pushed onto them, and its placement has been criticized for disrupting established workflows.

Excel Insiders on Windows and macOS can now employ the =COPILOT function to search the web, retrieving and grounding results in real‑time data. This capability is also available to Frontier customers via the web interface.

Analysis: By enabling live web searches directly within Excel, Microsoft is positioning its AI as a real‑time research assistant, potentially reducing the need for external browsers and boosting productivity. This move could also intensify competition with other spreadsheet platforms that are exploring similar AI integrations.
