Microsoft Launches Surface Laptop with Enhanced Trackpad, Snapdragon X2

Microsoft has quietly refreshed its mainstream laptop range with the launch of the eighth‑generation Surface Laptop, following the high‑profile debut of the Surface Laptop Ultra earlier this month.

The new model is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus and X2 Elite SoCs, delivering up to 58 % faster graphics and an 80 TOPS Neural Processing Unit for on‑device AI tasks. Despite the performance boost, the chips maintain the low power consumption that has become a hallmark of the line, allowing users to run for up to 20 hours on a single charge.

The updated laptop comes in two sizes: a 13.8‑inch model and a 15‑inch variant. Visually, the design remains largely unchanged, with the addition of a new Jade hue that may appeal to fans of the Surface Laptop 5. Other available colors include Platinum, Black, and Dune.

The 15‑inch version boasts a higher‑resolution display—3,270 × 2,180 pixels at 262 ppi—while the 13‑inch model sits at 201 ppi. Both screens support a maximum brightness of 600 nits in SDR and HDR, feature a 1,300:1 contrast ratio, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a 3:2 aspect ratio, though they remain IPS panels rather than OLED.

Microsoft has upgraded the Surface Laptop 8’s touchpad, now offering haptic feedback for a range of gestures across apps and the operating system. This tactile enhancement, first introduced in recent Windows 11 updates, is limited to select devices—including the Logitech MX Master 4, Surface Slim Pen 2, the forthcoming Surface Laptop Ultra, and the new Surface Laptop 8.

Like its tablet‑shaped counterpart, the Surface Laptop 8 commands a premium price. The base model launches at $1,599 for a 13.8‑inch unit equipped with a 256‑GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM. In the United States, the entry‑level configuration actually comes with double the storage at the same price point. Buyers can also opt for up to 64 GB of memory and a removable PCIe Gen4 SSD that tops out at 2 TB.
