The Metro series has never shied away from plunging players into a grim, post-apocalyptic world, but in Metro 2039, things look particularly bleak. A new gameplay trailer for the upcoming title, unveiled during the Gamescom Opening Night Live event, showcases how players will grapple with the challenges of a new regime in a world ravaged by nuclear war.
A Glimpse into the Darkness
The gameplay footage highlights many hallmarks of the Metro experience: claustrophobic metro tunnels teeming with enemies, mutated creatures lurking on the irradiated surface, and a diverse arsenal to help you survive. True to form, players will be able to customize their weapons to suit their playstyle, and the trailer emphasizes the series’ signature blend of stealth and aggressive action.
More Than Just Monsters
Metro 2039 features mutated creatures and monsters, but it seems that this installment will focus more on the horrors that people can inflict upon each other in this harsh world. During the Opening Night Live presentation, developers stated that Metro 2039 is a game about consequences: “the cost of silence, the terror of tyranny, the price of freedom.” It’s clear that the ongoing war in Ukraine has informed the development team’s approach to crafting this new chapter.
Survival Demands Mastery
4A Games promises that Metro 2039 will be a challenging experience, requiring players to master exploration, survival, combat, and stealth. While it serves as a continuation of the original trilogy, the developers also believe that it’s an ideal starting point for those who haven’t yet experienced the Metro universe. Metro 2039 is slated for release in February 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
