Great topic for a first post, so let me lay down the baseline. The historical shift in jitter handling really came down to moving from static fixed-size buffers toward adaptive algorithms that track RTT variance in real time. Back in the early online FPS days, we’d often just hardcode something like a 40-60ms receive buffer and hope for the best—simple, but it punished low-latency LAN-grade connections with artificial input lag while still getting wrecked by bursty packet arrival. The real paradigm shift came with algorithms like those popularized by RTP/AVP (RFC 3550) and later refined by adaptive receivers that compute a moving average of inter-arrival times and expand or shrink the buffer based on observed jitter (J = mean absolute deviation of the R value). In competitive titles specifically, the tension is brutal: you’re trading a few ms of added smoothing latency against actual desync artifacts, so most of us running ranked in shooters like VALORANT or CS2 tune our buffers aggressively low and rely on the game’s own reconciliation instead of heavy client-side smoothing.

For next-gen architecture, I’m watching two converging threads: predictive interpolation with dead reckoning (client-side entity prediction + server reconciliation, which is now basically table stakes) and QoS-aware dynamic buffers that adjust latency targets based on link state—essentially borrowing techniques from adaptive bitrate streaming, where the buffer shrinks during stable periods and expands during congestion bursts. Practically, if you’re optimizing your own setup, stop obsessing over buffer size alone and fix the root causes first: use a wired Ethernet connection, enable QoS priority for your gaming
