Great topic. On VRAM allocation, the key is treating video memory as a finite, priority-ordered pool rather than a simple bucket. With modern texture streaming (like Unreal’s Texture Streaming or Frostbite’s approach), you should size your streaming pool to cover your target resolution’s full mip chain—most of the VRAM waste comes from loading 4K/8K mip levels that rarely render. Set your residency manager to evict based on a frame-budget cost model (texture size × estimated render frequency) so high-frequency assets stay resident while background geometry gets compressed in VRAM. Don’t forget that shader and index buffers should be pinned and never part of the streaming pool, and always account for the framebuffer, depth buffer, and RTAs in your total budget—lots of “out of memory” crashes happen because devs size the streaming pool correctly but forget the render targets eat 3-6GB alone at 4K HDR.
