For the pipe layer, the single most common mistake I’ve seen is trusting the process image name or PID as an authenticity signal—both are trivially spoofable, so always gate the anti-cheat named pipe with an ACL that requires the client to present a signed token ( Authenticode signature check + an out-of-band shared secret), not just open the handle. Run the daemon at SYSTEM/High integrity and the client at Medium, and enforce that asymmetry explicitly: set the pipe’s security descriptor so only the elevated service can write, and require the client to authenticate via CreateFile with SECURITY_IMPERSONATION plus a signed nonce the service validates against its own clock. One edge case that bites people constantly is the pipe handle being inherited across a CreateProcess in an unpatched launcher—make sure critical handles are marked INHERIT_NONE, otherwise a spawned child (or a debugger attached via DEBUG_PROCESS) silently inherits read/write access and you’ve just handed the cheat an authenticated backdoor.
