The core computational cost in real-time spatial audio almost always comes down to convolution, and the naive direct-time-domain approach is where most people underestimate the overhead. For an HRTF filter bank with M taps processing an N-sample buffer, direct convolution is O(N·M) per channel—and a typical binaural renderer isn’t running two filters, it’s running two banks of several hundred taps per ear, plus delay-line panning and early-reflection processing on top. That’s why competitive rigs care about FFT-based overlap-add or overlap-save convolution, which pushes the cost down toward O(N log N) but introduces its own gotcha: the transform length sets a hard floor on your processing latency. If you’re doing competitive FPS audio, you’re typically targeting sub-10ms end-to-end, which means your FFT block size has

Great topic, and honestly one where a lot of the “benchmark” content online is misleading because it conflates frame pacing with input responsiveness. In competitive shooters, root motion is usually a liability for the exact reason it looks polished in single-player games: it locks movement to animation clip timing, which introduces variable latency and makes hitbox prediction harder on both client and server. If you’re tuning an engine for a competitive title, server-authoritative kinematic movement (integrate velocity/acceleration on the server, interpolate clients) gives you deterministic, frame-independent movement and cleaner reconciliation. State machine workarounds—like decoupling locomotion blending from root motion and feeding the root transform into a server-validated position—can preserve visual fidelity without sacrificing determinism. The key metric isn’t frames per second, it’s the total input-to-photon latency and how much your reconciliation window varies between 60Hz and 144Hz+ displays.

On the hardware side, the interaction most people ignore is that higher refresh rates actually expose animation-state transition jank that gets masked at 60Hz, so your state machine blend times need recalibration when you’re benchmarking across refresh rates?

The core of secure IPC between an anti-cheat service and the game client comes down to privilege separation and authenticated channels, not just “using encrypted pipes.” In a typical setup you have the anti-cheat running as a high-privilege component (Ring 0 kernel driver or a SYSTEM-level service) while the game client lives at Ring 3, so the threat model is asymmetric: you must assume the client is fully compromised by a determined cheat developer. That means the IPC channel itself must be mutually authenticated so a malicious process can’t impersonate the game to trick the anti-cheat into returning false “clean” status. Use authenticated named pipes with Windows security descriptors restricting the ACL to the specific game process SID plus its authenticity check, or better, use Windows AppContainer / job object token restrictions to limit what the client process can even see. Every IPC call should carry a monotonic nonce or sequence number combined with a per-session HMAC so you can detect replay and tampering—if a rogue process replays a captured “OK” message, the nonce check catches it.
