Great topic. When you’re pushing low latency in competitive titles, the draw call budget is usually the real bottleneck, not raw rasterization throughput. In DX12 Ultimate, the thing that trips people up most is treating Ray Tracing and Mesh Shaders as add-ons rather than integrating them into your dispatch graph from day one. Descriptor heap sizing is where most overhead leaks happen—pre-allocate descriptor heaps per frame with a ring buffer pattern and reuse them across your command list pool. If you’re doing per-object material updates, avoid updating descriptor tables on the CPU every frame; use dynamic descriptor indexing where your driver supports it (RDNA2 and later do), otherwise batch your updates into a single heap and rely on descriptor set layout matching so you can swap sets without reallocating.

On the Vulkan side, the win comes from indirect and multi-draw dispatch for instanced geometry—build your draw lists into a GPU-visible buffer and use vkCmdDrawMultiIndirect so you cut hundreds of host-side calls down to a single dispatch. Pair that with proper command buffer pool reuse (you should be recycling primary command buffers per frame with a fence-based double or triple buffering scheme) and make sure you’re using semaphores for image/synchronization
