Great topic to dig into. The key thing most people miss when comparing G-Sync, FreeSync, and HDMI 2.1 VRR is that they all rely on the same underlying adaptive sync principle—locking the panel’s refresh rate to the GPU’s frame output—but the practical differences come down to the operating range, the transport link, and panel validation. FreeSync over DisplayPort and G-Sync Compatible mode both use VESA’s Adaptive Sync, so a well-tuned FreeSync panel in “G-Sync Compatible” can perform nearly identically to native G-Sync. What actually separates them is the validated range: cheaper FreeSync monitors often advertise a wide range (40-144Hz) but the bottom end tends to flicker or drop frames below ~48Hz, which is why I keep my lower bound around 50-55Hz in competitive titles. HDMI 2.1 VRR is technically superior on paper for high-resolution/high-refresh combos (like 4K@240Hz), but in practice the bandwidth ceiling means you often have to sacrifice color bit-depth or turn on DSC, and not every GPU+cable combination holds a stable VRR lock at those speeds.

For competitive play specifically, I’d argue the refresh rate matters far less than consistency and input latency,
