Great topic. The real advantage of Hall effect switches in a competitive context comes down to the lack of a fixed physical actuation point combined with the analog reporting. Unlike mechanicals where you’re locked to ~2mm of travel and a fixed bump, magnetic switches let you set the actuation point anywhere from 0.1mm to full depth, which matters a lot for movement games where you’re mashing WASD—you can dial in a 0.2mm actuation and still get reliable registration without bottoming out. The rapid trigger feature is where it really separates itself: instead of requiring the key to fully return before re-activating, it re-fires the moment you release past your reset threshold. The key calibration knob is the distance between your trigger and reset points—if you set them too close together you’ll get accidental double-triggers from hand micro-movements, but if they’re too far apart you lose responsiveness.

The biggest thing people get wrong here is assuming the transport itself is the security boundary—the real question is authentication between the two processes and how you handle untrusted state coming back from the client. On Windows I’d lean toward a named pipe with a unique, non-guessable name (GUID-based, not “MyGameAntiCheat”) wrapped in a security descriptor that restricts access to SYSTEM or the game’s signed process token, paired with an integrity-level check via GetSecurityInfo to make sure the client isn’t running at Low/Medium trying to talk to your High-integrity service. The handshake should be mutual: the service verifies the client’s image path against a signed catalog and checks the process token, while the client verifies the service binary signature and PID before trusting any response. Don’t use memory-mapped files for anything security-sensitive unless you’re doing it purely for bulk telemetry like frame timing, because map/unmap races and stale-view corruption are a nightmare to reason about. Everything security-critical goes over a length-prefixed, framed protocol where every message has a sequence number and a keyed HMAC (use a per-session ephemeral key derived from the handshake) so you can detect tampering, replay, and truncation at the application layer rather than trusting the OS.
