When you’re pushing a high-frequency game loop, the system allocator becomes a real bottleneck because malloc/free carries hidden costs: per-call heap locks, free-list traversal, and occasionally a brk/mmap syscall on the hot path. In our benchmarks on a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with 2GB/s of sustained alloc churn, a stack allocator (pure bump pointer with LIFO rollback) was the fastest for transient frame-scoped data—basically zero per-op overhead since you’re just advancing a cursor and resetting it each frame. Pool allocators shine when you’re spawning and dying the same-size structures repeatedly (entities, projectiles, particle chunks); we saw ~15-20x lower tail latency than malloc because you avoid fragmentation and pointer chasing entirely. Great topic. The thing most people get wrong when chasing low-overhead dispatch is assuming the GPU is the bottleneck when it’s almost always the CPU-side validation and descriptor bookkeeping. In both DX12 and Vulkan, the classic failure mode is heap/descriptor drift — you allocate descriptors on the CPU with a monotonically growing free heap but forget that a stale descriptor read back from the GPU lags the CPU’s view. The fix is usually decoupling the write path from the read path with a ring of descriptor heaps synced via fences, not “just recording more efficiently.
