RTDI (the Ray-Traced Diffraction and Interference system Epic built into UE5) is genuinely the biggest shift in in-game audio propagation since reflection probes, and the reason it matters for competitive play specifically is that it closes the gap between where the sound appears to come from and where it actually originates. Older Source 2 setups relied heavily on baked reverb volumes and raycast-based bounces—fast and cheap, but they fudge diffraction, so a shooter hiding around a corner would have their footsteps register as “in front of you” rather than “behind you, muffled through the wall.” RTDI actually simulates the wave bending around geometry, which gives more accurate directional cues and occlusion. That’s not just immersion—it’s a measurable edge in any competitive shooter where audio is your primary tracking tool. The catch is the compute cost: it’s essentially doing path-tracing for sound, so you’ll see CPU spikes and frame-time hitches if you’re pushing it across large outdoor maps.

Stripping services by name is where most people dig their own grave. The classic mistake is disabling anything with “Telemetry” or “Push” in the name and calling it a win, but the real latency killers are usually the components you accidentally break by removing too aggressively. I’ve hit BSODs on 0x124 WHEA errors just from killing SysMain on an SSD without realizing Windows then thrashes its pagefile differently, and I’ve seen the infamous “we can’t update Windows” loops when people gut Windows Update alongside the bloat. The distinction that saved me: don’t remove driver or OS-critical services, disable them. Toggle them off in services.msc first, game for two weeks, and only permanently strip what you can live without. Also, most “background process” culprits aren’t services at all—they’re scheduled tasks (\Microsoft\Windows\...) and startup entries. Use msconfig and Task Manager’s Startup
