On the determinism front, the thing that bites everyone is floating-point consistency across the target hardware. If your replay is just a stream of inputs, you’re only as good as your simulation’s reproducibility, and that dies fast once SIMD lane ordering, FMA contraction, denormals, or multithreaded physics stepping differ between capture and playback. My recommendation is to pin the critical simulation to fixed-point or at least normalize the float pipeline with --use_fast_math disabled and a hard rule against compiler reordering (use volatile intermediates or intrinsics you control). For the serialization itself, I’d go with a hybrid: full authoritative snapshots every N frames (say 30–60s) as a “save-state anchor,” then delta-compressed input between them. Snapshots handle crashes, desync recovery, and debugging far better than pure input replay, and the delta stream keeps storage trivial. Quantize
