Great topic, and I’ve spent way too many nights chasing DPC latency ghosts in the debugger. One thing worth clarifying up front: when LatencyMon flags nvlddmkm.sys, don

Straight answer: hitscan and ballistic projectiles aren’t interchangeable from a netcode standpoint, and picking the wrong one for a competitive title will bite you on latency-sensitive titles. Server-side hitscan is the most unforgiving registration model because the hit is resolved at the exact instant of the shot. The server has to reconstruct remote players’ positions at subtick precision, which is why CS2 leaned hard into the subtick system rather than a flat 128-tick grid. At 128 tick your tick interval is 7.8ms, so a shot that lands 8ms after your click can silently miss if the server’s interpolated snapshot is off. Ballistic projectiles actually make this easier, not harder: the projectile becomes a deterministic server-authoritative entity with its own velocity, so travel time gives both clients something to interpolate and both players something to react to. That’s why Overwatch’s rocket-based weapons feel fair even at 64 tick while hitscan duelists live and die by interpolation.

If you’re shipping a competitive shooter, run hitscan on a fixed-timestep server at a minimum of 128 tick with subtick hit sampling, and keep client-side prediction locked to the same fixed timestep to avoid the rubber-banding you get when prediction and reconciliation drift. For ballistic rounds, simulate the projectile server-side with a fixed timestep, clamp max distance and lifetime deterministically, and let clients interpolate with bounded latency compensation so the shooter’s input time is what the server checks against, not the arrival time. Also flag your anti-cheat: hitscan is trivially exploitable with hit-scan spoofing if the server trusts client ray origin, so always re-verify on the server. On the hardware side, your 540Hz panel and high polling rate mouse won’t fix registration latency—input lag and netcode latency are separate axes, so bench your actual server round-trip time with pingplotter before blaming the tick rate.
