Great topic to dig into, and honestly the replay architecture is where most competitive titles either nail determinism or quietly fall apart under scrutiny. The core decision you have to make up front is between a lockstep deterministic simulation and a state snapshot approach, and that choice cascades into everything else. With lockstep (think fighting games, RTS engines), you serialize only the input stream—frame number plus each player’s commands—so the replay is tiny and perfectly faithful, but it demands that the entire simulation be deterministic: fixed-point arithmetic instead of floats, no reliance on the system clock, and RNG that must come from a seeded PRNG replayable frame-for-frame. The moment you leak a non-deterministic source into the simulation—memory allocation order, thread scheduling, or even a hash iteration order tied to heap layout—your checksums diverge and you get the dreaded “replay desync.” State snapshot systems (common in shooters and MOBA-style games) sidestep the determinism problem by recording compressed snapshots at intervals, but they introduce their own math: you’re now doing delta compression between frames, quantizing positions to integer grids, and managing interpolation buffers so the playback is smooth rather than teleported.

On the mathematical modeling side, the
