Great topic. For anyone digging into this, the practical reality is that modern competitive titles rarely encrypt the entire process address space—that costs too much FPS and adds input latency, which is death in a ranked match. What you actually see in production is selective, page-level encryption driven by a kernel-mode driver. The core mechanism is a modified page table entry scheme where sensitive pages get a “protected” flag, and the driver installs a handler that decrypts the target region on-demand before the CPU accesses it, then re-encrypts it on the next context switch or when protection is revoked. ESEA’s EVE was an early pioneer of this user-mode approach, but the real architecture now lives in kernel mode (think Vanguard-style) because user-mode anti-cheat can be unhooked with a simple SSDT/IDT manipulation. The key insight most people miss: the decryption key is never fully resident in plaintext memory. It’s split across registers, stack fragments, and XOR’d with rotating per-session salts, so a simple dump of RAM gives you useless ciphertext.

On the obfuscation side, the stuff that actually holds up against reverse engineers is control flow flattening combined with instruction substitution and virtualization of critical code paths.
