Great topic, and worth being precise here because a lot of the “TBDR is just for mobile” takes out there muddies the water. The core architectural difference comes down to memory bandwidth, not raw compute. Immediate-mode desktop GPUs (think NVIDIA Ada/Ampere and AMD RDNA2/3) rasterize and shade geometry on the fly, streaming depth/stencil tests and color writes directly to GDDR over the high-bandwidth bus. TBDR instead splits the frame into spatial tiles, rasterizing each into on-chip SRAM first, then batching by material so overdraw-heavy scenes don’t thrash memory with redundant shading. That’s why it dominates on Apple’s integrated silicon and Arm Mali/PowerVR in phones—bandwidth is the scarce resource there, and power efficiency matters far more than peak throughput. On a desktop with gigabytes of GDDR6 and a fat memory pipe, that bandwidth-saving advantage largely evaporates, which is exactly why you don’t see true TBDR on mainstream desktop GPUs.

For competitive play specifically, the distinction matters more than casual gaming because of input latency and frame pacing, not just FPS. Immediate-mode pipelines give you more predictable per-frame scheduling and lower overhead on the heavily instanced, low-poly geometry typical of titles like CS2, Valorant, or Rainbow Six—TBDR’s tile batching can actually introduce micro-stalls when tiles don’t pack cleanly, which shows up as 1% lows and stutter even when average FPS looks fine. If you’re benching on a laptop with an iGPU or a thin-and-light, TB

Confirmed the exact latency profile on high-speed capture. Matches your benchmark data perfectly.
