Great topic. Let me break down what’s actually happening under the hood. Black eQualizer works by applying a localized gamma shift to the lower end of the tonal range—specifically it compresses the shadow region so that subtle luminance differences in dark areas get spread across a wider slice of your panel’s available digital drive values. On an 8-bit panel (256 levels per channel), the native gamma 2.2 curve maps input code values to output luminance via L = (C/255)^γ. When you crank Black eQualizer up, the monitor effectively applies an inverse gamma boost to the shadows, pushing values like 8, 16, 24 up toward 32, 48, 64 so your eye can resolve them. The catch is that you’re redistributing limited bit-depth, so you’re not gaining information—you’re stealing resolution from the midtones and highlights to buy shadow detail. On a 10-bit panel or with 10-bit+FRC this tradeoff is far less punishing because you have 1024 levels to work with.

For the mathematical modeling side, if you want to actually characterize your panel’s response, don’t rely on the OSD number—measure it. Grab a calibrated photometer (a Calibrite or i1Display is the minimum) and capture the actual gamma curve at each Black eQualizer setting by plotting measured luminance against input code value. You’ll typically see the curve steepen in the 0–20% region and flatten as you climb, which is exactly where banding creeps in during gradient-heavy scenes. To minimize distortion, calibrate your monitor to a 650
