I always require authenticated named pipes with a per-connection nonce plus a monotonic sequence number so messages can’t be replayed or reordered, and I frame every message with an explicit length prefix rather than relying on read() boundaries, because partial reads across a pipe reconnect are the classic source of silent desync

Save-state serialization in competitive titles really comes down to one non-negotiable constraint: determinism. You can’t build a reliable replay or rollback system if re-executing the same inputs doesn’t produce bit-identical state every time. The moment you let non-deterministic operations leak in—uninitialized memory, thread scheduling order, or worse, non-reproducible floating-point math on GPU-accelerated shaders—your serialized snapshots become garbage. Most serious engines sidestep this by serializing input frames plus a deterministic lockstep simulation rather than full state dumps, because a 200MB snapshot per frame is financially insane compared to a few bytes of input.
