As Capcom prepares to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of gaming’s most enduring franchises, the development team behind Mega Man: Dual Override has opened up about the future of the beloved blue bomber. In an exclusive sit-down interview covered by IGN ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2026, director Shinya Ikuta, producer Hiroyuki Minamitani, and art directors Yuji Ishihara and Shinsuke Komaki discussed everything from the game’s difficulty balance to whether fans might ever see a Mega Man dating sim.

The interview followed IGN’s hands-on time with both Mega Man and Proto Man in the upcoming mainline entry. Through a single interpreter, with multiple team members contributing, the developers answered a wide range of questions covering design inspirations for new characters like Twinkle Girl, the differences between the two playable heroes, and how the studio is balancing tradition with innovation as it approaches this milestone anniversary.

A Celebration Four Decades in the Making

The team made an early decision to release a brand-new game specifically to mark the franchise’s 40th anniversary. According to Capcom, the project became a celebration of the entire series, with extensive internal discussion about which elements fans would most enjoy seeing return in a modern Mega Man title.

“Yes, next year is the big 40th anniversary of the Mega Man series. We had decided early on we would be releasing a new game to celebrate this. It’s a celebration of the entire series. There was a lot of discussion across the team about what are elements and things that people would enjoy seeing in a new Mega Man game. It’s safe to say it influenced and inspired the development of Mega Man: Dual Override.”

The studio also addressed its decision to drop the numbered branding from the title, a move intended to keep newcomers from feeling intimidated. The developers explained how they aim to welcome first-time players while still delivering the challenge that longtime fans expect.

Balancing Accessibility with Challenge

To ease new players into the experience, Capcom introduced systems like the custom chip mechanic and a stage structure divided into three distinct areas. According to the team, these areas intentionally grow more difficult as you progress, with earlier sections designed to be friendlier while allowing players to collect chips along the way.

In the final version of the game, completing areas earns screws that can be traded for over 50 different chips offering a variety of active and passive effects. Players can also revisit easier portions of robot master stages to farm resources before tackling harder sections, providing a flexible approach to overcoming difficulty spikes while Twinkle Girl remains deliberately challenging but rewarding.

The Override Mechanic and Dual Playthroughs

Dual Override introduces the override system, allowing Mega Man to transform into a powerful form for a limited time at the cost of temporarily losing certain abilities. The developers described this as an idea they had wanted to execute for years, combining a cool visual transformation with genuine risk.

Players commit to either Mega Man or Proto Man for a full playthrough rather than switching mid-run, though both heroes share the same overarching story while revealing different personalities and dialogue depending on who you choose. The team also revealed that new robot masters are developed through enthusiastic input from across the staff, with an emphasis on creating concepts that remain easy to understand at a glance.

Looking Toward the Future

When asked whether Capcom might ever explore genre mash-ups such as a survival horror title or a dating sim, the team laughed and declined to comment directly on future projects while acknowledging that many ideas exist for how Mega Man could fit into different genres.

“Obviously we can’t really comment on what’s going to happen in the future, but there are a lot of different ideas about how Mega Man can be incorporated into different genres.”

Capcom

The developers also reflected on how they maintain the core identity that defines Mega Man while staying attuned to market trends and player expectations. As the franchise heads toward its anniversary, Capcom insists it is striking a healthy balance between honoring tradition and doing what is right for its audience.

Mega Man: Dual Override continues to build momentum ahead of its launch, with additional Proto Man screenshots recently shared by Capcom as fans await more details about the game’s full feature set.
