Media Molecule, creators of Dreams & LittleBigPlanet, unveil new open‑world IP

Media Molecule, the celebrated British studio behind PlayStation’s most beloved titles, is reportedly venturing into fresh territory with a brand‑new open‑world intellectual property.

Analysis: The announcement signals Media Molecule’s intent to broaden its creative footprint beyond narrative‑driven experiences, positioning the studio to compete in the increasingly crowded open‑world segment and potentially redefining its brand identity.

Sources from MP1st and a recent online portfolio belonging to a senior environment designer, who joined the studio in April 2025, confirm the project’s existence.

The portfolio reveals that the designer is collaborating on an “unannounced project, New IP,” handling tasks such as “level blocking out main POIs, moment‑to‑moment gameplay, forage design, and scripting various gameplay elements.”

Additional clues in the portfolio—references to “open‑world content” and “forage design”—suggest that the game may incorporate survival or crafting mechanics, staples of contemporary open‑world titles, while the focus on “main POIs” underscores a commitment to the genre’s hallmark exploration and discovery features.

In May 2024, Media Molecule co‑founder Mark Healey offered a glimpse into the studio’s latest venture, noting that while the exact status remains unclear, it’s no secret they’re developing a new intellectual property. He added that the project appears to lean more toward a conventional game than a purely creative tool, based on what he’s heard.

Following Healey’s departure in 2023, John Beech has taken the helm as the studio’s new creative director.

Earlier this year, in April 2023, Media Molecule announced the discontinuation of support for Dreams, and by October 2023, the company had reduced its workforce by roughly 15‑20 %.

A PlayStation State of Play event is slated for June 2, 2026, but it remains uncertain whether Media Molecule’s forthcoming title will be showcased there.
