Mattel Gears Up for Gaming Domination: New Studio Aims to Bring Iconic Brands to Life

Published: Updated:

Get ready, gamers! The company that brought you Barbie, Hot Wheels, and countless other beloved toys is officially entering the gaming arena with a full-fledged studio. After decades of licensing its intellectual property, Mattel is taking control of its gaming destiny with the launch of Mattel Game Studios.

Mattel Game Studios: A New Era for Iconic Brands

This isn’t just about slapping a logo on an existing game; Mattel Game Studios represents a commitment to creating original gaming experiences rooted in the company’s rich history. The new studio, comprised of 300 developers spread across offices in Los Angeles and Hangzhou, China, will operate under the umbrella of Mattel Digital Studios. This move allows Mattel to not only develop its own games but also manage existing licensing deals for third-party titles on mobile, console, and PC.

While Mattel has previously dabbled in gaming through licensing agreements, the launch of Mattel Game Studios signals a more ambitious approach. Recent releases like “Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite,” a mobile couch co-op roguelike, and teases for “UNO Wild,” a unique new “Uno” experience currently in soft launch, hint at the studio’s potential. And yes, that Hot Wheels game we’re all dreaming of is reportedly “in active development.”

“Mattel Game Studios gives us the scale and capabilities to build and publish more original gaming experiences inspired by our iconic brands,” said Marcus Liassides, head of Mattel Digital Studios, in a press release. “Together with our successful collaborations across the industry, it strengthens our ability to reach fans through great games wherever they choose to play.”

However, the gaming landscape is notoriously challenging. Even tech giants have stumbled when attempting to build AAA studios in-house. Just recently, Hasbro retreated from the market following several cancellations and write-downs. Amazon’s recent decision to abandon its own AAA game development ambitions serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved.

The success of Mattel Game Studios will likely depend on managing expectations and focusing on projects that leverage the company’s strengths. While we’re excited about the possibilities, including a potential “Hot Wheels meets Grand Theft Auto” or a modern Barbie cozy sim, it’s crucial to remember the inherent challenges of game development.

We can already look forward to “Barbie Rewind,” a remaster anthology collection of decades of Barbie games, slated for release later this year. And “Hot Wheels Let’s Race: Ultimate Speed” just hit the shelves last year. Only time will tell if Mattel Game Studios can navigate the complexities of the gaming industry and deliver on its ambitious goals. We’re cautiously optimistic and eager to see what they create.
