Marvel Studios has re-released Avengers: Endgame with new footage under the title Encore, a move that has pushed the 2019 crossover film back to the top of the all-time box office chart while drawing sharp criticism for retroactively rewriting its own narrative history. The re-release, designed to bridge the gap between Endgame and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, helped the film surpass Avatar once again after a period in which the sci-fi epic had reclaimed the record. But rather than earning praise for its box office feat, Encore has been widely condemned as an attempt to paper over Marvel’s real-world struggles by pretending that years of scrambling were always part of a grand design.

The new material amounts to four additional scenes stitched into the already running film, and critics argue they do little more than expose how much the studio’s plans have shifted. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has suggested that the buildup to Thanos’ snap in Infinity War was far more elaborate than fans remember, a claim that longtime viewers find difficult to take seriously given how thin the actual setup appears on rewatch.

A Patch Job Disguised as Planning

The core of the criticism centers on Feige’s insistence that Marvel always had Doomsday mapped out. In a July interview, Feige attempted to downplay the buildup to Thanos’ universe-altering snap by reducing it to a handful of memorable moments.

“I do think—I was just saying to somebody else—that the Thanos buildup has built up in people’s heads over the years. He sat on a chair at the end. He pulled a gauntlet out and said, ‘I’ll do it myself.’ And he yelled at Ronin on a video screen briefly and that was kind of it.”

Critics note that Thanos’ threat had been seeded throughout the earlier phases of the franchise long before Infinity War premiered in 2018, making Feige’s characterization of the buildup as little more than a chair and a gauntlet feel disingenuous. The comparison to Doomsday is stark: where Endgame benefited from years of careful setup, the upcoming film has needed an entire re-release just to justify its decision to bring back Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, a character who has appeared in exactly one post-credits scene across 18 years of Marvel movies.

The Scenes That Expose the Pivot

Encore contains four new scenes, and each appears designed more to obscure than to illuminate. One shows Loki visiting Steve Rogers after the events of Endgame proper, sparking fresh speculation that Rogers’ decision to travel back in time and live a life with Peggy Carter may be retroactively reframed as some multiverse-shattering event. Another scene, reportedly IMAX-exclusive for reasons critics see as emblematic of Marvel’s priorities, depicts the Time Variance Authority noting multiple incursions as different universes collide, including that of the former Fox X-Men films.

A third scene follows Bruce Banner shortly after Spider-Man: Brand New Day being abducted by Doom, while a fourth reaches back to one of the most emotionally resonant moments in modern cinema. In the original Endgame, viewers hear audio of Tony Stark forging his Iron Man mask from 2008, playing as a poignant tribute to the hero who launched the MCU and sacrificed himself at its climax. Encore now “reveals” that this hammering sound was actually Doctor Doom creating his own iconic mask all along.

Someone At Marvel Thinks We’re All Stupid

The most laughable of these additions rewrites a moment that functioned purely as homage into a contrived link in a chain of connections that never existed. Rather than recasting Jonathan Majors to salvage its original Kang-centered plan, Marvel has spent three years attempting to conceal the fallout from Majors’ 2023 domestic violence case and the subsequent excision of both the actor and his character from the franchise.

Looking Ahead

By the studio’s own metrics, Encore has succeeded. It restored Endgame’s position as the highest-grossing film ever made and set the stage for Doomsday, which is expected to draw audiences eager to see characters spanning more than 25 years of superhero cinema appear together on screen. The re-release demonstrates that Marvel still possesses the cultural pull to mobilize fans around a big-screen event.

Yet the broader reception suggests the strategy carries significant risk. By insisting everything was part of an elaborate plan, Marvel risks appearing defensive rather than confident, treating its audience as though they cannot see through the retroactive retconning. As one critic put it, the studio seems more interested in convincing itself that it is in control than in being honest about a franchise that has spent years fighting to regain its footing.
