Wizards of the Coast is set to launch Reality Fracture, its next major Magic: The Gathering expansion, on October 2 for physical release and September 29 digitally on Magic Arena. Building directly upon a three-year narrative arc that began with the Wilds of Eldraine set, the new product plunges the game’s beloved planeswalkers into a multiverse-threatening crossover in which they confront twisted mirror versions of themselves, according to official announcements.
The storyline was ignited by planeswalker Jace Beleren, who attempted to forge an entirely new multiverse free from the threats Magic has faced in recent years—the Phyrexians, the Eldrazi and others. But completing that project would overwrite the existing multiverse, setting off a cascade of conflicts where familiar heroes face off against their own doppelgangers. Chandra, normally a pyromancer wreathed in flame, now battles a cryomantic counterpart wielding ice magic, while the notoriously gothic necromancer Liliana confronts a version of herself who practices life magic and, to her horror, wears white.
A Story That Demands Attention
The crossover is deliberately comic book in scope, pitting iconic characters against dark reflections of their own natures. For longtime fans, the contrast between these mirrored versions carries deep emotional weight, but newcomers may struggle to fully appreciate the stakes involved.
Tomik Vrona illustrates this challenge well. A member of the shady Orzhov Syndicate who excels at finding legal loopholes, Tomik is essentially a lawyer for the magic mafia. In Reality Fracture he appears as a sparkmage who delights in breaking not only the laws of the legal system but physics itself. Without knowledge of his established lore, that transformation may not land with the same impact.

Mirrored Together
To ensure these paired cards resonate regardless of a player’s familiarity with the storyline, Reality Fracture booster packs will deliver echoed pairs together. Players can expect to see both versions of Tomik, Ajani or any other featured planeswalker at the same time, making the contrast between them immediately apparent.

The pairing system means you get to see a fire wizard and an ice wizard side by side and understand exactly what’s happening without having to know the events of a tie-in novel trilogy or a six-issue limited series. It respects that Magic is, for many players, first and foremost a social game.
Magic: The Gathering production team
This design choice acknowledges that much of Magic’s appeal lies in its communal nature—the gathering implied by its very name. For countless players, the setting and characters remain secondary to the simple joy of playing cards and sharing a table with friends.
Release Details
The expansion will debut digitally on Magic Arena on September 29 before reaching global physical release on October 2. Pre-release events are scheduled to begin on September 25, giving dedicated players an early chance to explore the new cards and mirrored mechanics.
As one of the most anticipated expansions in recent memory, Reality Fracture represents both a culmination of years of storytelling and a fresh challenge for Wizards of the Coast to make that narrative accessible to newcomers. Whether longtime fans or those just discovering the multiverse, players will have plenty to discuss as they navigate this dramatic new chapter.
