•According to a report by Jackie Thomas for IGN, Magic: The Gathering designer Mark Rosewater has told frustrated fans that players do not need to follow every new card release, even as Wizards of the Coast shows no sign of slowing its output.
Rosewater addressed player “product fatigue” from six annual sets in a Tumblr post answering whether people feel overwhelmed by the volume. He said research showed only a small minority of players track every newly released card, adding that this group is “very enfranchised, so they’re over represented online.”
The game already has over 33,000 unique cards. We’re well past the mark where any one player can mentally track everything.

Rosewater said limiting releases to what a small group can comfortably remember would not make good business sense. He said the upper limit should be guided by what players are purchasing and playing, rather than how easy it is to track new cards — meaning the flow of new Magic cards will continue as long as sales support them.
The response online was mixed. A Reddit thread sharing the post drew more than 1,300 upvotes, with some agreeing but many upset by his framing.
“There are going to be 5,000 new cards a year, deal with it or don’t,” wrote user GunTotingQuaker. “My issue is it feels like every time I dust off a 1+ year old EDH deck to see what I might update… it’s like half the fing deck.”
Player Amarsir said the volume affects the Standard format specifically: “Does he not remember Standard? I mean I can understand forgetting it exists. But the whole concept is knowing each new set.” They added that Commander players do not need to know every card, but questioned whether a shift from eight sets to 18 in Standard should now affect them.
Others echoed Rosewater’s advice. User MoO wrote: “Folks should take the same attitude towards Magic releases as the news: unplug for a bit when it’s too much, it’s healthier.”
TunefulTunic asked whether Standard players really need to know every card in a set, prompting Kanin_usagi to reply that lands are important to know along with planeswalkers and major archetypes. “Otherwise most sets really only have like 25-ish cards that will see any major play,” they said, adding uncertainty about which non-land cards from Final Fantasy or Ixalan actually see play.
Magic shows no sign of slowing: there were seven total sets in 2026, with Reality Fracture the most recent and a Star Trek crossover launching next month. 2027 will be somewhat slower with six sets, but all full-size — unlike this year’s smaller Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Hobbit releases.
Wizards of the Coast recently announced its first Universes Beyond set for 2027 at New York Comic Con. Unlike 2025’s Spider-Man or 2026’s Marvel Superheroes, Darkhold Destiny will see the Magic team creating its own Magic-flavored story with Marvel characters.
