Lionsgate Unveils New Director for Next Saw Film as Franchise Reboots Under James Blum Production

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Lionsgate has officially greenlit a new chapter in the horror franchise that spawned it, appointing Mike P. Nelson to direct the next Saw film as the studio gears up for Jigsaw’s next game. The appointment marks a fresh creative direction for the series, which was originally built by James Wan and Leigh Whannell from a disturbing short film into a gory low-budget feature. Nelson, an emerging horror filmmaker known for the Wrong Turn reboot and Silent Night, Deadly Night, will helm the project, which is being written by Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock and produced by horror legends Wan, Jason Blum, and Whannell.

The selection comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise, which has struggled to find its footing since Saw X left the door open for prequel films but ultimately stalled amid reported creative disagreements. With the original creative team having since walked away, Lionsgate appears determined to reinvent the property rather than simply continue it, and Nelson’s hiring signals a deliberate departure from the formula that defined the earlier installments.

A New Voice for a Defining Franchise

Wan largely stepped away from the Saw series after the third film, going on to direct hits such as Insidious, The Conjuring, and blockbusters like Aquaman. His absence from the director’s chair for the next entry was a notable development, but the producer has confirmed he will take a much more hands-on role this time around as the studio attempts to bolster the franchise once again.

Speaking on the decision to place Nelson at the helm, Wan praised the director’s approach, emphasizing the importance of honoring the original vision while allowing for creative evolution.

“Making the original Saw was a defining experience for me, so it was essential to find a director who would honor that world. Mike has a raw, distinctive filmmaking voice with an inventive approach to the genre, and I believe he’ll bring something truly unique and special to the franchise.”

Nelson was equally enthusiastic about the opportunity, describing the chance to work within the series’ established framework as a career highlight. He highlighted the strength of the script and the creative freedom the project offers.

“Being asked to play in this twisted sandbox with James is nothing short of a dream come true. Greg and Geoff and James have crafted such a wild script that brings the mystery of the original while exploring new insane bloody ideas that meld so well with the brutal moral compass of the franchise. Let the games begin!”

Jigsaw’s Return and a Reimagined Direction

While the specifics of the upcoming film remain unclear, the return of the iconic Jigsaw character appears to be a central pillar of the project. Wan and Whannell confirmed earlier this year that the character, who died in the third film, will play a significant role in the next installment despite his earlier demise.

The two creators stressed their commitment to recapturing the spirit of the original film, which centered on Jigsaw’s philosophy and the moral questions that defined the series’ early identity.

“Leigh and I, we’re not going to give too much away, but we don’t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw. That’s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit, what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw’s philosophy and what makes him tick.”

Wan and Whannell’s earlier confirmation to Bloody Disgusting that Jigsaw would feature prominently suggests the studio is leaning into the character’s legacy while attempting to refresh the franchise’s tone and storytelling for a new era.

Looking Ahead

As the creative landscape for Saw shifts, the franchise is expanding beyond the big screen. A new Saw video game titled Saw: Genesis is also in development from Bloober Team. The multiplayer title puts three players in a deadly game of escape while a fourth player manipulates traps and attempts to eliminate the victims, offering a fresh interactive take on the horror IP.

With a new director, a returning Jigsaw, and a reinvigorated production team, Lionsgate appears poised to steer the Saw franchise into uncharted territory. The next film’s release window has not yet been announced, but the appointment of Nelson and the confirmed involvement of Wan and Whannell suggest a project with genuine creative ambition behind it.
