The future of The Matrix is looking uncertain after Lilly Wachowski, one half of the directing duo behind the original groundbreaking films, expressed reservations about a potential fifth installment. While Warner Bros. has announced The Matrix 5, with Drew Goddard (The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods) slated to write and direct, Lilly’s comments suggest that the franchise may be entering its twilight years.
A New Vision for The Matrix?
Warner Bros. initially unveiled plans for The Matrix 5 in 2024, aiming to continue the legacy of the iconic series while introducing a fresh perspective. Jesse Ehrman, President of Production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, previously stated that Drew Goddard’s vision would “honor what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago” while offering a “unique perspective.” However, with Lilly Wachowski expressing her doubts, the project faces an uphill battle.
Lilly Wachowski’s Reservations
In a recent interview on KCRW’s The Business, as reported by Variety, Lilly Wachowski candidly stated, “Warner Bros., they wanna make another thing. They’re always gonna wanna make another thing. Personally, I don’t wanna play in that sandbox anymore. I’m kinda done.” This sentiment casts a shadow over the planned sequel and raises questions about its creative direction.
Adding another layer of complexity, Lilly revealed that Drew Goddard intends to seek the Wachowski’s blessing before proceeding with The Matrix 5. This creates a “complicated situation” where the original creators may have a significant say in whether the project moves forward at all.
A Legacy of Innovation
The Matrix revolutionized action cinema upon its release in March 1999, followed by The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. Nearly two decades later, The Matrix Resurrections arrived in 2021, directed solely by Lana Wachowski, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity.
The Matrix Resurrections received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, grossing $157 million worldwide against a reported budget of $190 million. Its simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max further complicated its performance.
The Future Remains Unclear
Currently, very little is known about The Matrix 5 beyond Warner Bros.’ initial announcement. Whether Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return remains to be seen, but based on Lilly Wachowski’s comments, the future of the franchise hangs in the balance.
The question now is whether Drew Goddard can deliver a Matrix experience that honors the original while forging its own path, or if Lilly Wachowski’s reservations will ultimately bring an end to this iconic series.
