LEGO has released its largest-ever SpongeBob SquarePants set, reimagining the underwater world of Bikini Bottom for a grown-up audience. The new LEGO SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom (set #11386), available now exclusively through the LEGO Store, marks the first SpongeBob-themed collection since 2012 and stands as the brand’s first set explicitly designed for adults, carrying an 18+ age rating. With 1,794 pieces, it is not only the biggest SpongeBob creation in the company’s history but also a sweeping tribute to one of television’s most enduring animated series.

The original Bikini Bottom LEGO set debuted in 2006 with just 579 pieces and a notoriously unsettling Squidward minifigure. Now, two decades later, that modest kit has been completely reworked into something more than three times its former size. The new release arrives as the beloved cartoon celebrates over 300 episodes and continues to draw fresh generations of viewers well beyond its original millennial audience.

A Nostalgic Tribute Reimagined for Adults

The set captures the iconic homes and residents of Bikini Bottom, packed with references and running gags that longtime fans will immediately recognize. LEGO has redesigned nearly every element from scratch, updating colors, moldings, and details to suit collectors who grew up watching SpongeBob SquarePants during its 1990s golden era.

The set is divided into two instruction books, with the first covering Patrick and Squidward’s houses, and the second dedicated entirely to SpongeBob’s famous Pineapple Under the Sea. There are also a number of smaller builds to round out the scenery.

Among those smaller builds are the crooked Bikini Bottom sign, SpongeBob’s Boatmobile, his Bubblestand, and a small diorama of the Jellyfish Fields featuring a rotating platter that lets jellyfish appear to swim around. Each piece has been thoughtfully updated: SpongeBob now sports accurate coloring and proper printed pants alongside his trusty jellyfish net, while Patrick features an oversized head and stomach molded as one piece over his torso, complete with a Neopolitan ice cream cone.

Craftsmanship Behind the Pineapple

The set’s centerpiece is SpongeBob’s pineapple house, which assembles across seven bags. LEGO designers took an unusual approach to recreate the fruit’s rounded exterior and signature criss-crossed diamond pattern. Each panel attaches to a rigid internal frame built from Technics pieces, allowing them to sit at angles and pivot slightly for a curved appearance.

The interior is equally detailed, featuring a hidden Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Easter egg inside the television, SpongeBob’s shellphone, a photo of Gary on the wall, and even his fictional friends Penny, Chip, and Used Napkin. Upstairs, the bedroom includes a bed with ladder and diving board, an alarm clock, and Gary’s half-eaten dessert.

The designers at LEGO took a very interesting approach to recreate the rounded nature of the pineapple’s exterior. While the panels don’t fit together perfectly, the overall shape and finished house looks fantastic.

Squidward’s four-floor house spans six bags and includes his clarinet, canopy bed, bathroom with bubble bath, and a tanning bed on the top floor. A shower curtain even reveals a silhouette of SpongeBob hiding behind it—a nod to the episode “Squid’s Day Off.” The exterior earned praise for its dark blue pieces and chunky nose-and-ears geometry, while only two small sticker sheets were needed overall.

Eco-Friendly Packaging and Community Response

The contents arrive across 14 bags, making this the second build using LEGO’s new eco-friendly packaging that replaced transparent polyethylene with paper—an initiative launched in 2021. Reviewers noted a minor practical concern: these paper bags can trap small pieces along their seams, so builders should verify all parts before starting.

The set also includes buildable versions of DoodleBob—complete with the Magic Pencil—and Gary the Snail, though the latter has changed little since early iterations aside from improved coloring. All three houses connect to their bases for compact display or can be arranged freely, giving fans endless scenes to recreate.

Looking Ahead

LEGO SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom (set #11386) retails for $219.99 and is available now exclusively from the LEGO Store. As one of the most anticipated adult-oriented collections in recent years, it arrives as a definitive tribute to an animated series that has captivated audiences for more than 25 years.
