Travis Baldree’s New York Times bestselling cozy fantasy novel “Legends & Lattes” is receiving its first large-scale graphic novel adaptation, arriving in hardcover, e-book, and a signed deluxe edition on Oct. 6 through publisher Ten Speed Graphic. Adapted by Samuel Sattin and illustrated by Shanti Rittgers and Sarah Webb, the project translates the story of Viv, a mighty orc warrior who abandons the battlefield to open a coffee shop, into a new visual medium for readers discovering the world of Thune.
The graphic novel format offers fans a chance to step even more fully into the gentle fantasy setting that has made the novel a phenomenon. Rather than leaning on the familiar RPG-inspired conventions that dominate much of modern fantasy fiction, Baldree’s original work charts a quieter path. Books like Will Wight’s fantasy adventure series Cradle or Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl typically draw on role-playing game tropes to follow characters gaining new powers to face increasingly dangerous foes. Baldree takes a different approach, focusing instead on a warrior who must slowly build up her business rather than train to become stronger.
A Cozy World Worth Stepping Into
At the heart of the story is Viv, who finds new friends in the shy ratkin baker Thimble and the taciturn carpenter Cal as she converts an old stable into a cozy café. The graphic novel adaptation aims to capture that same warmth, inviting readers to linger over the world’s creatures, baked goods, and hot drinks. To give audiences a taste ahead of the release, Ten Speed Graphic shared an exclusive excerpt with Polygon, showing Viv sharing coffee with Cal and recruiting an assistant, the succubus Tandri.
The creative team worked carefully to preserve the tone of the source material. Sattin handled the adaptation while Rittgers and Webb brought the visuals to life, rendering the charming cast of Thune in a style suited to the story’s comforting mood.

That attention to quiet, atmospheric detail is precisely what has drawn readers to the novel in the first place, and the visual medium appears well suited to amplifying it.
Looking Ahead
The graphic novel is one of several ways Baldree’s world continues to expand. He returned to Thune for a prequel, “Bookshops & Bonedust,” which traces how a brash young Viv became a voracious reader, and “Brigands & Breadknives,” in which one of Viv’s friends gives up a quiet life to pursue her own adventure. Fans are hoping the remaining entries in the series will also receive the graphic novel treatment, allowing readers to see more of the cute creatures relaxing and enjoying even more hot drinks and baked goods.
For now, the Oct. 6 release marks the first time “Legends & Lattes” has been adapted at this scale, with a signed deluxe edition featuring colored page edges offering collectors an extra reason to grab a copy.
