Riot गेम्स has announced that League of Legends’ classic mode will cease to be a permanent feature once the calendar moves into 2027, ending its short-lived run. The mode, which offers a version of the MOBA mirroring its early days, debuted in July this year.
The developer found there is not enough sustained demand for a retro experience to justify keeping it running permanently, similar to classic modes seen in games like World of Warcraft. Instead, Riot plans to bring Classic back at some point down the line, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions.

We’ve seen a lot of players have fun revisiting the olden days with classic. At this point though, most have gone back to other parts of League. So Classic will be available through the rest of Season 3 and will then end its current run in January 2027. We’ll then put classic back in the box for now, with the goal of bringing it back, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions.

The studio added that it would share more about what it learned from this run, including where it thinks it got Classic right, where it could have gone more classic, and where sticking too closely to the past may have held the experience back.
Riot said it is issuing refunds on classic-specific content that will no longer be usable, and shipping the Act II Classic Battle Pass in patch 26.21 with a free track only. Once that patch launches next week, the game’s classic store will only offer champions, runes, and rune pages.
The developer also confirmed it would continue releasing new (old) champions through the mode’s remaining time. This includes Irelia, Karma, Quinn, Aatrox, and Caitlyn from 26.20, as well as Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim, and Lucian in 26.21. New champions will continue to arrive every patch through 26.23, including Volibear, Urgot, and Udyr, who all placed top 3 in the studio’s most recent Council poll.
Riot noted it made its Vanguard anti-cheat optionally less invasive on certain PCs earlier this year for players planning to jump into Classic before it departs.
