Lanterns: Episode 2 – Hal & John’s Chemistry Shines, Even When Apart

Following a strong debut, Lanterns Season 1, Episode 2 continues to build on the compelling dynamic between Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). While the pilot episode showcased their initial friction, this installment explores how these characters function both together and independently. The result is an engaging hour of television that balances gritty realism with surprising humor.

Hal and John: A Dynamic Duo, Even Solo

While the episode features some fantastic scenes showcasing the core Hal/John dynamic, much of the runtime focuses on these two men as individual players. John undertakes a seemingly straightforward mission for his mentor, while Hal delves deeper into the unsettling mysteries plaguing Rushville, Nebraska. Both characters uncover far more than they initially anticipated.

Chandler continues to deliver a pitch-perfect performance as this uniquely abrasive take on the iconic DC hero. However, even Hal Jordan needs someone to challenge him, and Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald) admirably fills that role. Her sharp wit provides a welcome counterpoint to Hal’s antics, creating some truly entertaining banter. This episode also allows us to understand both sides of their dynamic, highlighting Kerry’s understandable frustration with Hal’s behavior while simultaneously reinforcing his intuition that something is deeply wrong in Rushville.

Humor and Mystery: A Perfect Blend

One of the most surprising aspects of Episode 2 is just how much it leans into comedy. Beneath the gritty murder mystery, Lanterns is surprisingly funny, thanks in no small part to Hal’s unconventional detective work. John Stewart also contributes to the humor as he navigates the surreal environment of Hal’s empty mansion and encounters the enigmatic “Earl.” Pierre excels at playing the calm, collected straight man while everything around him descends into absurdity.

While I previously expressed reservations about the central murder mystery, this episode introduces enough new elements to keep things interesting. We learn that Sheriff Kerry was more aware of the alien presence from the beginning than she initially let on, and it becomes increasingly clear that something sinister lies beneath the surface of this seemingly ordinary town. The introduction of Antaan (Paul Ben-Victor) and his men also adds another layer to the unfolding drama.

While the frequent use of human disguises for alien characters does somewhat limit the scope of the story, it also allows for subtle clues that hint at the true nature of these individuals. The interrogation scene from last week was a prime example, and the recent exchange between John and Antaan further reinforces this pattern.

Cosmic Implications and Future Conflicts

Episode 2 concludes on a strong note, with Hal and John reuniting at the motel. Their interaction is compelling, as John grapples with the question of whether he can truly trust Hal before ultimately revealing everything he learned from Antaan. This moment suggests that there may be hope for this unlikely duo.

However, the episode takes a sharp turn towards more cosmic DC territory when Hal finally dons his Green Lantern suit for the first time since 2016 and flies to Oa to confront the imprisoned Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen). The brief exchange between these two characters is tantalizing, and I am eager to see how this conversation unfolds. Sinestro is one of my favorite DC villains, and the series would greatly benefit from embracing more of the larger-than-life elements of the Green Lantern mythos.
