Kojima Reveals Sony’s Shocking Decision to Drop Physint, But Vows No Bad Blood

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Hideo Kojima, the visionary director behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise, has opened up about the moment Sony Interactive Entertainment abruptly ended its funding for his long-awaited stealth-action game, Physint, revealing that the news delivered during a June Zoom call left him stunned and forced his studio into an urgent scramble to find a new publisher. The announcement came as Sony confirmed it would no longer publish the title for PlayStation, sending shockwaves through the gaming community and reigniting speculation about the troubled project’s future. Fortunately for Kojima Productions, Microsoft’s Xbox has since stepped in to rescue the development, though the veteran creator has been candid about the emotional and financial weight the decision carried for his roughly 200-person studio.

According to Kojima, the fallout began in June when Sony reached out to schedule a virtual meeting. The director was caught off guard, having just returned from back-to-back promotional appearances in New York for a Prada event and Los Angeles. When the conversation turned to the project’s funding, the reality of the situation hit him hard.

“So in June, Sony Interactive Entertainment said they wanted to have a Zoom call,” Kojima said to IGN. “I was so busy at that time–I had just gone to New York for a Prada event and then to LA right after. But anyway, I came back, and we had this Zoom call. They said they can no longer fund development for Physint. I was shocked, and I said, ‘What did you say?’ I couldn’t quite process what they had said. I wasn’t sure because I was in shock.”

Kojima did not disclose who he spoke with during the meeting or offer any explanation for Sony’s decision to cease funding. What he made clear was the immediate pressure that followed: protecting Kojima Productions and its staff meant finding a replacement partner quickly. The decision was initially kept within a tight circle, shared only with Kojima Productions president Shinji Hirano and head of talent development Aki Saito. This secrecy set the stage for several months of uncertainty, during which Kojima searched extensively for a new home for the project before Xbox ultimately signed a deal with the veteran developer.

Speculation and the Road to Xbox

While Sony’s withdrawal was confirmed, the gaming world was left to speculate about the reasoning behind the move. Some observers pointed to concerns that Kojima had begun to miss deadlines and exceed his budget on the Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor, casting doubt on the project’s viability. The timing of Sony’s exit coincided with reports that the game was facing broader development challenges, adding fuel to the debate about what had gone wrong.

Despite the turbulence, Kojima has made it clear that he is not holding a grudge against the company that once championed his work. He emphasized that his relationship with PlayStation remains intact, even as the project found a new life under Microsoft’s banner.

“Make no mistake, this was a serious situation for the studio with a range of potentially significant implications,” Kojima wrote in a post on X, likely responding to Bloomberg’s reporting on the game’s struggles. “While we recognize that the article may have caused alarm, we want to reassure you all, for the record: that the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for Physint continues to move forward with Xbox, and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong.”

The community reaction has been one of cautious optimism. Fans who had grown anxious over the project’s uncertain status now have renewed hope, particularly after recent developments at Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show broadcast, where Kojima revealed that Bill Skarsgård had been cast as the protagonist of his stealth-action game. The casting announcement added a fresh layer of excitement to a title that had already endured a rocky journey through its publishing history.

Looking Ahead

With Xbox now officially backing Physint, the focus has shifted toward the game’s continued development and the delivery of new details to a hungry fanbase. Kojima’s public reassurances suggest that the studio is in stable financial and creative shape, positioning Physint to move forward despite the upheaval. As the project progresses under Microsoft’s umbrella, the industry will be watching closely to see how the partnership develops and whether the game can finally realize the ambitious vision that has defined Kojima’s career for decades.

For now, the immediate crisis appears to be behind the studio, but the experience underscores the fragility of game development in an era of shifting corporate priorities. Kojima’s willingness to speak openly about the ordeal not only provides clarity to a confused fanbase but also serves as a reminder of the human stakes behind every headline in the gaming world.
